Pinewood Derby Information
________________________

Getting Started
Pinewood Cars will be handed out at the November pack meeting. Each scout receives his car as part of the dues paid. Additional cars are available for $5.00 per car.

Only Authorized BSA pinewood car bodies may be used. Add-ons from the BSA catalog are also approved.

Building the car can be as easy or as difficult as you like it to be. On the Web, you can find pages and pages of ideas, plans, paint jobs, etc. Be creative, have fun and share some quality parent-son time!

Besides having fun, the most important thing to remember when building a Pinewood Derby car is to make sure it is built to meet the Official Pinewood Derby Rules.

Siblings and parents (and other non-scout persons) may race in the Open Class race.

Race Day
Race day is an awesome experience and we recommend you invite grandparents, friends and anyone that likes fun! There are door prize drawings, awards for “Judge's Choice Best Car Designs” and lots and lots of racing fun. Racing is held by rank (for example, Tigers vs. Tigers) and the top two winners from each rank move onto the District Championships in May (location, date, time TBA). There is a grand prize race (for trophies) amongst the top winners per rank. We also have pizza, snacks and drinks for those hungry race fans and a movie room for those exhausted race fans!

One Reminder...
The Pinewood Derby is a competition of the Scouts, and the cars should be built as much as possible by the Scouts themselves.  Depending on their level (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos) there is quite a bit of work the Scouts can do.  If you, as a parent, want to build your own car and compete, we offer the “Open Class” series for all non-scouting competitors (siblings, parents, and friends).

When (and where) is the Pinewood Derby?
Saturday, January 28th. Races start at 5:30 pm. The event will be held at the First Baptist Church of Redmond. Set-up will begin at 5:00 pm.

When can the Scouts get help with their cars?
The Pinewood Derby Tech Day Workshop is on Monday, January 16th (MLK day), 10:00 am - 5:00 pm, and will be held in the Allens' garage. This is an all-day event where adults can help their Scouts build, sand, cut, paint or work on their cars. (And get your questions answered!) More information on Tech Day is right below.

What is "Tech Day"?
Tech Day is all-day drop-in Pinewood Derby car-building workshop hosted in the Allens' garage.  We provide the tools, help, and insights into building the pinewood car. Drop in at any time. It has been highly attended and is perfect for those first-time Pinewood Derby car-builders (and their adults) who don’t have all those fancy-schmancy tools at home.

Bring your car, your ideas (or not), and some grubby clothes.
Building a car takes more than an hour or two – estimate up to 6 to 8 hours total.
You may also work on the last minute details of the cars on the three inspection nights but we recommend you start the car before the first inspection night!

Each car (including Open Class) must be inspected and approved for racing. Cars may not exceed weight or length limitations.
Cars not inspected and impounded by the final evening (Friday, January 27th) WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO RACE – no exceptions.
